Atherosclerosis

What are Cardiovascular Atherosclerosis Diseases?

Cardiovascular Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of fatty plaques, cholesterol, and other substances on the artery walls.

These deposits can cause narrowing or blockage of the arteries, leading to various health issues depending on the affected artery.

Mortality associated with Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Diseases

Despite therapeutic advances, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) remains one of the leading causes of death globally. In 2019, cardiovascular diseases were responsible for approximately 17.9 million deaths worldwide, representing about one-third of all deaths, with a significant portion attributed to ASCVD.
In Europe, cardiovascular diseases accounted for approximately 1.7 million deaths in 2021, representing about 45% of total deaths. In Portugal, in 2016, there were 15,123 deaths attributed to atherosclerosis, corresponding to 14.3% of total mortality.

Symptoms

Atherosclerosis is often a silent disease, with symptoms usually manifesting when an artery is significantly blocked.

As the disease progresses, symptoms may vary depending on the affected arteries and the severity of the blockage.

Common symptoms

Chest pain
Shortness of breath
Extreme fatigue
Heart palpitations
Nausea
Cold sweats

What are the risk factors?

Atherosclerosis is a complex disease with multiple causes, having several factors that increase the risk of developing the condition. These risk factors are interrelated and may act together to accelerate the disease process.

Main Risk Factors

High LDL cholesterol
Hypertension
Diabetes Mellitus
Smoking
Advanced Age(Men over 45 and
women over 55)
Family history of cardiovascular disease
Sedentary lifestyle
Obesity
Diets rich in saturated and trans fats
Genetic mutations
Liver and kidney diseases
Premature menopause
